ASTM D413 Rubber Property - Adhesion to Flexible Substrate

This part of ASTM D 413 specifies the test conditions for determining the adhesion strength between piles of fabric bonded with rubber or the adhesion of the rubber layer in articles made from rubber and attached to other materials. Specimen types are either strip specimens – Type A or Type B; or ring specimens.

The test involves taking a strip of material with both layers bonded together, initiating an artificial "tear", or separation at one end of the strip, inserting these free ends into a set of grips, and pulling the layers apart.  The appropriate load string would typically consist of flat faced grips - mechanical or pneumatic, and a load cell properly sized to capture the forces involved - usually between 5 and 50 lbf (225 N).
The resulting graph is representative of a tear separation of several inches, with peaks and valleys of force along the way.  ASTM D413 requires that load and extension be reported.  Instron's Bluehill 2 application software's Peel, Tear, Friction module captures these results and reports them automatically, as well as displaying them on graphs and tables.
