Adhesion Strength of Rubber to a Rigid Substrate 90º Degree Peel (ISO 813)

ISO 813 specifies a method for the determination of the adhesive strength of rubber to rigid materials. The standard describes a peel procedure to determine the adhesive strength between rubber materials to a rigid substrate. In an adhesion test, a measured forced is applied to a test specimen in order to strip a layer from the specimen with tearing at the bonded surfaces. The value of interest is the "Adhesion Strength" - defined as the maximum force divided by the width of the specimen. Data acquisition is a key factor in obtaining accurate test results. The sampling rate of the testing system should be high enough to accurately capture the test peaks and troughs.

Bluehill® Software calculates the adhesion value and allows the operator to register the observed failure type from a drop-down menu that increases productivity and facilitates opearors training. We recommend a 90° peel fixture that holds and moves the substrate as the rubber strip is peeled off by an upper grip. Pneumatic side-action grips provide an appropriate solution due to ease of use, productivity and improved repeatability. Manual screw-action grips also provide an adequate and affordable solution for this test.
